How to apply

Some vacancies require an Application Form to be submitted whilst others ask for a Curriculum Vitae (CV), please refer to Current Vacancies to check which format of application is required for the post you are interested in.

If you are applying for more than one post you must submit an application for each job that you are interested in.

Tips for completing the application form

  • Read and follow the instructions on the application form carefully.
  • Complete the form as neatly as possible in blue or black ink. Alternatively forms can be typed.
  • Read the information in the Job Description and the Person Specification to help you focus on the requirements of the post and make sure that you clearly demonstrate how your skills and experience match the requirements of the Person Specification.
  • Do not leave any blanks. If there are questions that do not apply write ‘not applicable’ or ‘n/a’.
  • Photocopy your application form and keep it safe so that you will be able to refer to it if invited for an interview.

Tips for writing a CV

  • The purpose of your CV is to get you in front of an interviewer.  It is the primary marketing tool for selling yourself and your expertise.
  • Do not put your name, address or personal details on your CV - the purpose for this is to ensure there is no bias in the recruitment process.
  • Always tell the truth. You must always be able to substantiate what you have written when asked about it at the interview.
  • Always submit your CV with a short covering letter.  This should succinctly bring out the two or three key reasons for the interviewer to see you, the detail of which will be spelled out in the CV itself.
  • Try to keep your CV to no more than two pages.  More than three is never a good idea.
  • Start with a three to five line personal profile which may relate closely to the content of the job for which you are applying.  You should be comfortable that this describes you honestly and 'sells' your unique blend of skills and experience. Then go on to summarise your career to date in reverse chronological order.  Do keep it brief and relevant.
  • The next section(s) should deal with your qualifications, and then education, again in reverse chronological order.
  • Avoid using colourful paper, illegible handwriting, fancy fonts, including family photographs or attaching large documents to emails.
  • Each CV is particular to its owner. You must be comfortable with yours.

 Tips for disabled applicants

  • Calico has been accredited with the Two Ticks Symbol which is a recognition given by the Employment Service to employers who have agreed to take action to meet five commitments regarding the employment, retention, training and career development of disabled employees.
  • If you meet the essential criteria in the Person Specification and let us know that you are disabled we will guarantee you an interview.
  • Think about any adjustments you might need if selected for interview.  Also, give thought to any adjustments to be successful in the post and let us know at interview what these might be.
  • If you have any gaps in your employment history due to your disability then let us know on your application and include any other information or experience you gained at that time.
